About Villa Wolf Forster Pechstein Riesling

During the 19th century, the use of basalt flour and rock dust revolutionised agronomy with their ability to infuse life and minerals into the soil. In Palatinate (Germany), however, nature itself had accomplished this task thousands of years earlier. The Pechstein vineyard derives its name from the "pitch stone," that dense black basalt of volcanic origin that dots the plot like fragments of coal. During the day, these dark rocks voraciously absorb the sun's heat, slowly releasing it back to the vines during the night. This thermal contrast and geological richness impart a unique character to the grapes.

From the Mittelhaardt area, in the municipality of Forst within the wine region of Pfalz (Palatinate), Germany, Villa Wolf Forster Pechstein Riesling is crafted at the historic Villa Wolf estate. This winery, founded in 1756, is currently run by the renowned winemaker Dr Loosen. The grapes come from the Forster Pechstein vineyard, historically classified as Große Lage in the Bavarian classification of 1828, a top category equivalent to a French Grand Cru. The vines grow at a moderate altitude on soils composed of weathered sandstone marl and black basalt of volcanic origin, a combination that ensures optimal drainage and profound minerality. The area's climate is sunny and relatively mild for the German latitude, protected by the Haardt mountain range. The variety used is 100% Riesling, the reigning white grape of the region, cultivated under a philosophy of sustainable and eco-friendly farming.

The production of Villa Wolf Forster Pechstein Riesling is carried out with precision to honour the vineyard's character. The harvest is meticulously conducted by hand. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes are gently pressed, and the must undergoes alcoholic fermentation, the biological process where yeasts convert sugars into alcohol, using the naturally occurring yeasts from the vineyard, in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. After fermentation, the wine undergoes ageing on its fine lees, the inactive yeasts that add volume and silkiness, for 12 months. Finally, bottling is carried out after a light filtration, keeping the wine unclarified to preserve the purity of its natural profile.

Villa Wolf Forster Pechstein Riesling is a vibrant, profound, and immensely complex white wine that is not born of chance but the logical consequence of volcanic soil transmitting its energy directly to the glass.
